My Background in Building Biology

Don’t be scared, be aware. Once we know there are environmental exposures, then we can work together toward healthier solutions.
— Cheryl Mathews, Building Biologist, EMRS

Healthy Home Advisor, Cheryl Mathews, is a professional Building Biologist with an advanced degree as an Electromagnetic Radiation Specialist.  She consults with homeowners, schools, builders, architects, and real estate agents to help people create indoor environments that are truly healthy spaces for individuals to thrive in.  Cheryl helps build healthy homes and buildings going through new construction or renovation. She is dedicated to helping clients understand and remediate the effects of environmental pollutants in their homes, schools and communities.

Cheryl is uniquely qualified to help create healthier environments.  After a successful career in the Silicon Valley semiconductor and test equipment industry, Cheryl developed residential real estate.  She has over 28 years of experience designing and building residential properties. She’s seen and dealt with it all - toxic mold, high levels of radiation from electromagnetic fields (EMF), water intrusion, poor indoor air quality (IAQ), contaminated HVAC systems, chemical exposures from building materials, and even the deconstruction and reconstruction of a newly built toxic home which resulted in a legal construction defect case.

A “green” home is not necessarily a healthy home.  Cheryl and her family learned the hard way how “greenwashing” and “building-related” illness can dramatically change your life and negatively impact health and well-being.  She discovered the detrimental impact of today’s ubiquitous wireless radiation electromagnetic field (EMF) exposures and saw first-hand how EMFs can cause or exacerbate health conditions.  Everyone in her family suffered from debilitating health issues as a result of a toxic home, including cancer. Building-related illnesses lower the body’s innate immune system and ability to fight infections as well as create chronic inflammation.  Symptoms can be severe and are often traceable to a specific contaminant source such as mold infestation, microbial growth, high levels of EMF, chemical contaminants, and poor ventilation.

Is your home making you or a family member sick?

Cheryl’s clients find comfort in knowing she has lived through and overcome many of the challenges you may be facing today.  She empathizes with others who find themselves in an unhealthy environment as well as those who wish to proactively create safe living spaces.  Blessed, her family is healthy and thriving today because Cheryl implemented Building Biology principles in her own home and healthy dietary changes with amazing results.  Cheryl finds great satisfaction in helping others discover and feel the positive effects of a healthier living environment. She is relentless in the pursuit of finding causes and most importantly the solutions to what makes a building harmful to the health of its occupants.

Safe Communities

While creating a safe living and sleeping sanctuary is perhaps the most important contributor to sustaining good health, Cheryl recognizes there are outside environmental contributors that influence our well-being on a daily basis too.

She has worked in her community to ensure lead regulations are adhered to at the local level, and collaborated tirelessly for two years with town leaders to address small cell technology infrastructure.

Environmental issues taken in total can be overwhelming for many, but Cheryl’s clients appreciate her calm systematic approach.  She stands by the sentiment, “Don’t be scared, be aware. Once we know there are environmental exposures, then we can work together toward healthier solutions.”
